Our all-new Young Leaders In Action program will take place right here at The Country Place Retreat and Conference Center from July 17-23. It's a week-long program designed to develop leadership skills in students entering grades 9 through 12 who want to lead authentically, collaboratively and creatively. The Power of a Word

It all started with the dreadful threat of a lawsuit. Sara was a paralegal in a large multinational organization. While this situation took place in England, it could have been anywhere. Sara had filed a lawsuit against the organization. She claimed it was a hostile work environment. While still permitted to work, she was waiting to get a good financial settlement because of the extreme stress she claimed she was under at work. The new boss, David, was aware of how patterns play out in the workplace. He was nervous in his first meeting with Sara knowing any wrong statement could feed the lawsuit. At first, Sara didn’t want to meet without her union representative. David convinced her, however, to meet with him privately and to leave at any moment she felt uncomfortable. Read more...

“Patterns In Play” is a new column devoted to bringing you a case study of a specific pattern in play at work. We invite you to visit our Chat Room at www.ceoptions.com to share your comments and your own personal challenges. Patterns are “repetitive reactions that can keep us stuck in the world of ‘always’ and ‘never’ and influenced by family, culture and crisis. Leaders who can learn to read and redesign patterns can help create a work environment that limits the game called office politics.

Legacies Lead the Way Home

Coaching Through Resistance

Q:

I am coaching Jennifer, a team member who is having a great deal of difficulty changing her behavior. As the eldest of three sisters, she is used to being in charge and bossing others around. She sometimes doesn’t listen to others’ ideas and considers their input invalid. She is aware of her non-serving pattern and is trying to work on it. In the heat of the moment, however, she falls back into her old ways. What can I do to help her let go of the old?

A:

We all revert to old patterns in the “heat of the moment.” This is where having a trusted colleague can make a great difference. You can do two things that will help her. First, SLOW DOWN. Your slower physical movements and speech rhythm can have a calming effect on Jennifer and may even benefit the entire team. Meeting anger with anger escalates; meeting upset with calmness diminishes the intensity of the situation. Read more...
